About Us
Outdoor Gear has long and rich history, spanning over 115 years. Founded by Oswald Bailey back in 1906, the business was very different to what it is today, selling whatever they could! After the war, Oswald bought all the army surplus equipment he could find: tents, blankets, clothing and boots all sold the moment they appeared in his shops. This also set the foundations of the outdoor company we are today.
With almost 100 years of bricks-and-mortar retailing under our belts, we turned our attention to the then emerging world of online. We launched online in 1999 and were one of the very first outdoor retailers online. Since then we have established ourselves as a market leader in outdoor gear, awarded ‘outstanding’ after more than 12,000 customer reviews. We stay at the forefront of what’s new for the great outdoors, making sure we stock the right clothing and equipment for every kind of adventure.
At the start of a new era for Oswald Bailey's OutdoorGear, sibling team Chris and Helen Bailey are growing the online business to be an omni-channel eCommerce leader in Outdoor Gear retail expertise as their father Stephen Bailey begins retirement after running the business for more than 35 years. Based down in Bournemouth in Dorset, on the South Coast, we are very lucky to have a wealth of outdoor space around us. From sandy beaches, to ancient forests and rolling hills, we have everything here in Dorset. The New Forest National Park sits 15 miles or so to the east whilst the Jurassic Coast (a World Heritage site) and the Isle or Purbeck sits to the West. Our knowledgeable staff have spent their lives enjoying this outside space, hiking the footpaths, cycling the trails and paddling the rivers.
We provide a fast and efficient service through the use of an easy to use, effectively designed web site, and strive to deal with all orders, queries, and returns personally, promptly and professionally. We deliver throughout the UK using our courier partners, DPD and Royal Mail.
Oswald Bailey founded the business before passing it to his two sons, John and Frank Bailey. For the last 30 years or so, Oswald's grandson, Stephen Bailey has run the business and it remains family owned and run to this day now by Stephen's children Chris and Helen, over 115 years later! From the friendly team at the end of the phone to our dedicated warehouse staff, every member of Outdoor Gear is committed to providing the very best service at every step, for every order processed.
We understand the importance of great customer service. We have knowledgeable staff manning the phones weekdays from 9am-5pm, always happy to discuss your needs or answer questions. And we also know that you want your kit fast, which is why we keep our warehouse stocked with thousands of items, ready to be dispatched.
At Outdoor Gear, we jump at any opportunity to spend time outdoors. Whether we are walking, cycling, climbing or camping, we love to get out and use the kit ourselves. Who's who at Outdoor Gear?
Chris Bailey
A 4th generation member of the Bailey family business, Chris has long been responsible for the upkeep of the website and smooth running of it's systems.
Favourite Activity: When he's not working, you'll probably find Chris somewhere in Poole Harbour on his boat with his family.
Favourite Product: Chris is a Fjallraven fan, often sporting a Fjallraven Greenland Winter Jacket through the colder months!
Helen Bailey-Olde
An internationally acclaimed marine biologist, Helen keeps our business green, promoting environmental causes and the protection of the outdoors.
Favourite Activity: Helen is often found around water with her work, observing and recording dolphins and whales. Outside of this, Helen enjoys family walks in the local area.
Favourite Product: Helen has particular soft spot for her beloved Teva sandals!
Edward Cheek
Edward is our Operations Manager, and runs the business on a day to day basis. He oversees staff and is also our buyer, carefully selecting new products for the year ahead.
Favourite Activity: Walking and cycling are Edward's go to activities, although he enjoys spending time outdoors, surrounded by wildlife.
Favourite Product: He uses his Leki poles on a daily basis and wouldn't get far without them!
Russell Smith
Russell, our Warehouse Manager, has been with us for over 30 years and has looked after all aspects of the warehouse during that time.
Favourite Activity: A loyal Liverpool Football Club supporter, he also has a passion for photography and enjoying walks on the beach with his wife and dog.
Favourite Product: Russell has been using Berghaus for many years and his trusty Supalite Boots are always close by.
Simon Brewer
Simon is our Assistant Warehouse Manager and handles all customer returns.
Favourite Activity: Nothing can beat a warm, sunny day in the garden with a nice cold drink for Simon. It sounds good to us!
Favourite Product: Simon has a few pieces from Jack Wolfskin and loves their performance and fantastic fitting.
Obiora Agbalusi
With a background in Business Analytics, Obi does a fantastic job optimising our website and marketplaces he's always busy working hard in the background.
Hayley Thompson
Hayley is our customer service expert. She'll be answering calls, replying to emails along with other duties within the office.
