What is GPS?
The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation
system made up of a network of 24 satellites placed into orbit by the
U.S. Department of Defence. GPS was originally intended for military
applications, but in the 1980s, the government made the system
available for civilian use. GPS works in any weather conditions,
anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day. There are no subscription fees
or set-up charges to use GPS.
GPS has become ever more popular due to its free nature and also
the reduction in prices of GPS units over recent years.
Garmin one of the biggest manufacturers of GPS receivers currently
supply everyone from the aviation industry to campers and walkers and
from car drivers to boat captains. This wealth of expertise has meant
they are one of the most highly regarded companies in the field.
It is now possible to buy hand held GPS Receivers such as the
Garmin Etrex for sometimes as little as £100, an amount that would
barely provide you with a carry case 10 years ago!
