What is GPS?

GPS - Global Positioning System
Information by Garmin Ltd

More and more people now are using GPS (global Positioning Systems) as part of their day to day lives although they may not know it.
The most obvious examples people will recognise are the in car navigation unit they may have in their car. This enables people to put in a town, street or postcode and have turn by turn directions as to how to get their.
Another example would be walkers who may have a small hand held unit such as an Garmin Etrex which either features an on screen map or can be used in conjunction with a paper map to accurately plot your position.
Other examples are of course aviation and boating uses.
What you may not think of however is lorries and trucks delivering goods to your local shopping centre which often use Global Positioning Systems to both navigate and to enable Head Office to keep track of them.
Their are many other uses from the fun to the deadly serious, but before you decide what use you have for a GPS receiver let's learn some more about how it all works....

GARMIN ETREX GPS

Truly a small wonder, the etrex takes the best features of a 12 parallel channel GPS receiver and put them into a six ounce package that is only four inches high and two inches wide. The result is a unit that will literally fit in the palm of your hand.
